Many of you probably have one in your pocket right now. But did you know you can create a picture with words? When you look at a physical photograph, you transfer the image from a piece of photographic paper, or a computer or cell phone screen, to your &#8222;mind&#8217;s eye.&#8221; Similarly, when we read words that evoke an image, the image moves from the author&#8217;s imagination into yours.This lesson will invite you to explore the power of the element of literature writers call imagery. We&#8217;ll practice using words that appeal to the five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. We&#8217;ll use the skills we developed in practicing with imagery to create a haiku. Given the simplicity of haiku&#8217;s its form, this lesson is suitable for anyone &#8211; even students who have never written a poem before. We&#8217;ll walk you through the process from start to finish.
